The Feminisation of Migration: Gender, the State and Migrant Strategies in Bangladesh

Ishrat Shamim

Chapter 8 in Mobility, Labour Migration and Border Controls in Asia, 2006, pp 155-171 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract At the start of the twenty-first century, one out of every 34 persons worldwide is an international migrant. The Population Division of the United Nations estimates the total number of international migrants at approximately 175 million (United Nations 2002). This number includes refugees and displaced persons, but does not capture irregular migrants who escape official accounting. Almost half of the estimated 175 million migrants worldwide are women.
