Abstract:
Abstract After the introductory considerations of Chapters 1 and 2, there remains the admittedly fearsome task of dealing with oligopolistic decision making in these areas of integrated competition, and the point has arrived at which the primary approach to be taken to this market structure must be presented in some detail. The framework discussed in this chapter has been presented in both theoretical and applied forms in an extensive literature.1 As developed in this book it is designed to gain insights into the interdependent actions of firms that are in “mature” oligopolistic industry structures, a concept to be defined formally below, although it is capable of use in less settled, more aggressive environments, including active price and nonprice warfare. In the analysis of this work, however, with the exception of studies of entry in Chapter 11, the effort will be confined to mature industries, in which more peaceful patterns of competition and cooperation have emerged in the industry’s patterns of decision making.
