Chapter 1 in Adam Smith in Context, 2004, pp 1-14 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This book is the result of an intellectual journey, an expedition which has led me into an area that I would describe as the history of ideas, an interdisciplinary pursuit that includes history, philosophy, methodology and, in my particular case, economics. I consider the history of ideas to be an important way of understanding reality. It implies a particular approach to the nature of things in terms of its emphasis on context, and not only the text itself. In fact, there is a longstanding philosophical debate as to whether the historian of ideas should put greater emphasis on the text or the context. Some urge to ignore context altogether, but I personally believe that it is difficult to gain a serious understanding of a text without any consideration of the author’s circumstances.
