 Industry Level — The Life Cycle of Strategic AlliancesRehan ul-Haq Chapter 2 in Alliances and Co-Evolution, 2005, pp 19-52 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract This chapter will identify and analyze the antecedents of the main forms of collaboration now prevalent in the European banking sector and use this analysis to develop a general theory of the lifecycle of strategic alliances in the European banking sector. To do this, the chapter will review the history of cooperation and determine the extent of the historical propensity of banks to cooperate. It will present a longitudinal analysis of the use of strategic alliances in three time periods: the 1970s, the 1980s and the early 1990s. The first time period will be analyzed in depth, the latter two more briefly. This analysis will delineate the mutually-influencing, co-evolving relationship between the formation and evolution of such alliances (the ‘events’) that have occurred over the periods and the links with broader changes in the economic, regulatory, business and banking environments over the same period (the ‘mechanisms’). The terms ‘events’ and ‘mechanisms’ are as used by Lawson (1997), whose taxonomy is detailed in Appendix 1 of this book.
