Chapter 10 in A Concise History of Economic Thought, 2003, pp 92-99 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Anne Robert Jacques Baron de L’Aulne Turgot was born in Paris, the third son of a Norman family with a long tradition in the French administration and magistrature. He was destined originally for a career in the church, entered the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice and from June 1749 to 1751 was a student at the Theological Faculty of the University of Paris. After his father’s death, Turgot received an inheritance which provided him with sufficient income to set out on an administrative career, thus avoiding taking final church vows. During the 1750s, Turgot took up appointment to some judicial positions. He also engaged in much intellectual activity, and had time to travel extensively throughout France in the company of Gournay, the Indendant of Trade. His contributions to the Encyclopédie spread his fame as a philosopher, and he became a friend of Voltaire.
