Abstract: Abstract Tim Waterstone started a revolution in the British book retail trade when he founded Waterstone’s in 1982 with a loan of £10,000 from his father-in-law. By 1998, when Tim became chairman of HMV Media, Waterstone’s, which by now included rival Dillons, had a turnover of £390 million from 208 shops, four million customers and 22 per cent of the bookselling market.
