Failure and Reorganization of the Mass Merchandising Sector

Hendrik Meyer-Ohle

Chapter 8 in Innovation and Dynamics in Japanese Retailing, 2003, pp 165-187 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract By the beginning of the 1990s, the group of leading companies of the general merchandising sector had remained basically unchanged for nearly two decades with the same companies occupying the upper spots continuously. Nonetheless, as has been outlined in the previous chapters, these companies had undergone tremendous change during these two decades, developing from operators of general superstores to core companies of conglomerates with diversified portfolios of interests in retail and leisure-related industries. While suspicions concerning the financial strength and soundness of investments had surfaced from time to time, the public and especially the media had still regarded these companies with awe and had generally expected them to profit most from pending measures to free the distribution industry from regulation regarding the opening of new stores and manufacturer-dominated trade practices.
