The Cognitive Analysis of Competition in Industries and Markets

Gerard P. Hodgkinson

Chapter 2 in Images of Competitive Space, 2005, pp 8-44 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract As noted in the previous chapter, the cognitive approach to understanding problems in strategic management, a field traditionally dominated by economic analysis, is still in its infancy. Over the past two decades or so, however, the strategy field and indeed the management and organizaton studies fields more generally have witnessed a sudden growth of interest in the use of concepts and techniques from the cognitive sciences for the advancement of theory, research and practice, as evidenced by the proliferation of scholarly journal articles, conference proceedings, books and chapters in edited volumes addressing a wide range of topics from a cognitive perspective (see e.g. Barnes, 1984; Daft & Weick, 1984; Dutton & Jackson, 1987; Eden, 1992; Eden & Ackermann, 1998; Eden, Jones & Sims, 1979, 1983; Eden & Radford, 1990; Eden & Spender, 1998; Hodgkinson, 2001a, 2001b; Hodgkinson & Sparrow, 2002; Hodgkinson & Thomas, 1997; Huff, 1990; Huff & Jenkins, 2002; Kiesler & Sproull, 1982; Lant & Shapira, 2001c; Maule & Hodgkinson, 2002; Meindl, Stubbart, & Porac, 1994, 1996; Porac & Thomas, 1989, 2002; Schwenk, 1984; Sims & Gioia, 1986; Sparrow, 1994, 2000; Weick, 1995). The purpose of this chapter is to review those elements of this rapidly developing literature that are of particular relevance to the study of business competition from a cognitive viewpoint.
