Chapter 9 in Crisis and Restructuring in East Asia, 2004, pp 198-214 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Diversification was one of the principal pathways taken by the chaebol to expand business. As seen in Chapter 3, the abolition of industrial policy, which had previously limited industrial entry, allowed chaebol groups to diversify into new business lines. And in fact, starting in the early 1990s, there followed a wave of unrelated diversification across almost all major industries and, as a result, the number of companies in the electronics and semiconductors, automotive, iron and steel, petrochemical and oil industries, merchant banking, insurance and other sectors doubled and tripled.
