Roy Larke and Michael Causton

Chapter 8 in Japan — A Modern Retail Superpower, 2005, pp 137-160 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Convenience stores make up the most modern and innovative of all retail formats in Japan. It is safe to say that the leading players within the sector qualify as some of the best retailers in the world, both in terms of operations and retail control. This success is based on a number of key factors, most of which are unique to convenience store retailing or which originated in the sector, and have now been diffused to other formats: Supply chains built from the ground up Advanced, high-speed information technology infrastructures Applied merchandising integration
