Case Study: Marks & Spencer

Andrew Ward

Chapter Chapter 10 in The Leadership Lifecycle, 2003, pp 147-162 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In 1882, a young Michael Marks fled the anti-Semitic pogroms in Russia which followed the 1881 assassination of Tsar Alexander II. Arriving in northern England, Michael went in search of work, seeking a tailoring factory that he had been told employed many immigrant Russian Jews. While trying to find this factory, he met Isaac Dewhirst, who had built up a modest wholesale business in Leeds. The two young men clicked instantly and Isaac invited Michael back to his warehouse, where, discovering that Michael had been a street seller back in Russia, he offered him five pounds in order to start a business selling goods in Leeds and the surrounding towns. Thus the quest for funding and for speed to market that often plagues Creators was instantly solved for Michael by this fortuitous meeting. However, the drive, determination, and passion of the Creator certainly wasn’t lacking in the young Michael Marks.
