The Terminator

Andrew Ward

Chapter Chapter 6 in The Leadership Lifecycle, 2003, pp 84-94 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Terminators bring closure to an organization. However, this does not necessarily imply the failure of the organization, nor a leadership failure. Organizations can indeed fail, as we will explore further in the next chapter, by not effectively transitioning from one lifestage to the next, resulting in a mismatch between the lifestage of the organization and the particular role being played by the leader. Organizations can also fail because of a failure of leadership in any of the organizational lifestages, either by the ineffective fulfillment of the leadership role that matches the organization’s lifestage or by following an inappropriate leadership role for the current lifestage. However, there are circumstances where organizations reach the end of their existence, or at least their independence as a stand-alone organization, which do not represent failure. This can be because of either the fulfillment of the organization’s objectives or the strategic decision or realization that the organization is best served by being a part of a larger organization. In either of these cases, there is the need for a leadership role that takes the organization through this critical transition.
