Abstract: Abstract Once more the former Soviet republics of Central Asia matter — this time for commercial reasons. In the past, it was for reasons of geopolitical factors and imperial aggrandizement that anyone bothered with them. But now, not only are the economies of the republics becoming important in their own right but they are increasingly important to the rest of Asia, particularly China and its fast-developing economy.
