George Shackle: A Tribute

Geoffrey Harcourt

Chapter 11 in 50 Years a Keynesian and Other Essays, 2001, pp 175-176 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Everyone who knew George Shackle inevitably said what an exceptionally kind and generous person he was. My introduction to this aspect of George’s make up happened when I was a young lecturer in Adelaide in the late 1950s. We had there a very bright second-year undergraduate, Richard (Dick) Blandy (who is now Director of a Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, akin to the NIESR and the DAE combined). Dick had found a subtle mistake in one of Shackle’s books, something to do with potential surprise, if I remember correctly, and had written to Shackle about it. Shackle replied, thanking him in a most gracious way, and in the reprint of the book — or perhaps it was in another book which covered the same topic — there was a two-page discussion of the point attributed, with much emphasis and praise, to Mr Richard Blandy of the University of Adelaide. I remember our then youthful Professor, Peter Karmel, showing this to all and sundry in the Department, enthusiastically mingling pride in Dick’s achievement with admiration for Shackle’s generosity of spirit.
