Abstract: Abstract Austin Robinson was born on 20 November 1897 at Farnham in Surrey, the eldest child of ‘an impecunious clergyman’, Albert Robinson, who read mathematics as a scholar of Christ’s College, Cambridge and became a wrangler. He was ordained at the age of twenty-four, and spent the next eight years as a curate. Austin’s mother, Edith Sidebotham, was the daughter of a clergyman who was the vicar at Bourne near Farnham in Surrey for thirty-three years.1 As Alec Cairncross (1993: 4) has told us, it was a very happy marriage. The Robinsons had four children: three boys and a girl. The children had a happy childhood, even though their father was a remote and distant figure so that their mother did the lioness’s share of their upbringing. The upbringing itself fostered self-reliance, fun and games as well as providing an introduction to a sense of duty and the practical application of Christian principles.
