Abstract: Abstract This book is about infrastructure in Asia. Even though Asia has become the growth engine of the world it still lacks a backbone similar to that of the US and the advanced nations of Europe when we review the physical, institutional and educational infrastructure. The Asian crisis of 1997–8 has clearly shown that Asia has still some way to go to catch up with its counterparts in the West. In this book we consider these deficiencies and the way forward. But first we explore the early history of building infrastructure in the universe before we dive into Asian waters.
