Abstract: Abstract The year 1989 marked the start of the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe and the transition from state-planned to market economies. Germany was reunified, the Soviet Union collapsed and the Warsaw Pact was disbanded, along with COMECON, thus dissolving the long-standing Central and Eastern economic and military bloc.
