Chapter 14 in China and the Global Business Revolution, 2001, pp 897-933 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract It is impossible to appreciate the nature of the intense debates within China about large firms and China’s entry to the WTO without understanding the long historical perspective against which the debates are conducted. China’s political leaders almost always make reference to this background in discussing these issues. For example, in June 2000 Jiang Zemin held long talks with Lee Kuan Yew, former Prime Minister of Singapore, in the Great Hall of the People. The main topic was globalization. However, in discussing this issue, Jiang talked at great length about China’s economic achievements prior to the European Industrial Revolution and about the achievements of China’s ancient philosophers. China’s enterprise managers and even young, commercially-oriented Chinese people typically use this background as a frame of reference. Despite the explosive growth of international business and ideas, the nation remains an immensely important and enduring frame of reference.
