Fair Game: Leaders and Followers

Hans Westerbeek and Aaron Smith

Chapter Chapter 3 in Business Leadership and the Lessons from Sport, 2005, pp 51-70 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract From the loyal supporter and cheer squad to the club chairman and team captain, this chapter reveals why sport followers’ commitment is absolute throughout all levels of the organization. It builds upon this knowledge to demonstrate how followership can be engendered in all members of an organization through the right approach to leadership that emphasizes identity, ownership, and involvement. The chapter also provides the background for business leaders to understand the role of personality, charisma, tribal identity and other factors that contribute to organized followership.
