Chapter Chapter 6 in Business Leadership and the Lessons from Sport, 2005, pp 117-136 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the importance of personal development and readiness as a function of leadership development and performance. It provides a discussion on the psychological mechanisms necessary for individuals to develop spiritually and emotionally as a platform for a leadership contribution. Traditionally there have been few educational pathways for coaches, resulting in their need to develop some of their skills through self-development and reflection. Although the importance of professional management training for both coaches and business managers is undisputed, the advantage that coaches have acquired has included greater flexibility in their work environment to employ different approaches to developing players, particularly on an individual basis rather than one exclusively based on organizational standards and rules.
