Abstract: Abstract The need to understand the environmental impact of my agronomic work on rain-fed rice in Kenya was the starting point for my work in wetlands. Later, while setting up the Uganda National Wetlands Programme, it was clear that wetland functions were poorly understood, although benefits were well known – for example, harvests of fish, papyrus, grasses, clean water supply. A strong interest in the benefits quickly sets an applied research agenda – for example, determining sustainable fish harvests through catch and return recruitment studies; randomized fixed point papyrus quadrats and cutting frequencies; water quality assessment in transects downstream from sewage discharges.
