Abstract: Abstract The Swedish welfare state system has come to be regarded as a model worthy of emulation across the world. Sweden has built an advanced cradle-to-grave welfare state system around Per Albin Hansson’s concept of Folkhemmet (People’s Home), because of its extensive service orientation in which benefits are based on people’s needs and are distributed universally without discrimination. The Swedish model has also been called the ‘Middle Way’, as it presents a viable third approach between the two poles symbolized by a free market economy and a centrally planned economy. The Swedish model presents a viable mix, wherein competitive allocation of resources and private ownership of the means of production coexists with the deep ideological commitment towards a welfare state.
