Workplace Counseling

Anni Townend

Chapter 20 in Assertiveness and Diversity, 2007, pp 187-196 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Organizations have a range of communication channels and support services that are based on respecting people for who they are and what they do. Most of these services provide employees with an opportunity either to communicate with the organization about concerns and issues, or to discuss in confidence their personal issues with a professional counselor or advisor. The services are offered to employees on the premise that people need to communicate, to be listened and responded to, in order to be effective in their work performance and in working together. The provision of a counseling service is an acknowledgement by that the organization that people will, from time to time, experience problems that may impact on their effectiveness and indeed happiness at work. Organizations that acknowledge the “whole person”— employees’ physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual well-being —recognize that people need help from time to time in order to be their “best selves.”
