From Theory to Practice: The World of Business in Japan

Ulrike Maria Haak and René Haak

Chapter 7 in Market Entry in Japan, 2008, pp 118-130 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Preparing for a business trip to Japan takes time. The following factors must be taken into account: finding suitable dates for the visit; deciding on the participants; letter of introduction from a person known to both companies; involving interpreters at an early stage; thank you letters when dates have been agreed; Japanese-standard business cards; attire; and gifts. The Business year begins on 1 April and ends on 31 March. Timing a visit during the budget period, particularly in March and September (half-year accounts) is not ideal as Japanese managers are busy with planning and final accounts during this time.
