Faster and Farther: Building the Global Transportation System

William E. Halal

Chapter Chapter 6 in Technology’s Promise, 2008, pp 79-91 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract A great example of transportation’s importance can be seen in the fabled Silk Road that once connected Europe to the Far East. During most of the first millennium, caravans made the grueling trek from Rome through Turkey and Persia, across the long, barren deserts and rugged landscape of Afghanistan and Pakistan, to reach the Tang Dynasty in Eastern China.
