Abstract: Abstract This chapter’s focus is upon how the words Teader’ and ‘leadership’ are performative, that is, how those two words construct, or make both leaders and leadership thinkable. We are examining chief executives in Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) in this chapter, because the history of management and leadership in the NHS lends itself particularly well to this type of study.
