The Stilettoization of Economic Progress

Piya Mahtaney

Chapter 18 in India, China and Globalization, 2007, pp 231-246 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The elephant embodies tremendous potential and capacity. It is the colossus of the animal kingdom and it can perform an entire gamut of difficult tasks almost effortlessly. For a moment, let us imagine something ridiculous, that we attempted to compel an elephant to wear stilettos. Inevitably, the result would be one of two possibilities: either the elephant violently resists our attempt, in which case we will have to flee, or it concedes, in which case, however hard we tried, we would not be able to prevent it from taking a first step without stumbling.
