Asia’s Coming Medical Tourism Bonanza

Chapter 24 in Asia Future Shock, 2008, pp 167-173 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Medical tourism is going to be big business in Asia. Already, it’s a sector that’s growing exponentially. The initial fillip for treating foreigners has come from the large communities of Western expatriates already in Asia, particularly Southeast Asia. They and their families gave Southeast Asia’s better hospitals plenty of exposure to treating educated, more demanding, and wealthier patients. Tourism too has been important. Plenty of Western tourists, usually with health insurance cover at least for the duration of their vacation, injure themselves or fall ill during their stays in Thailand, for example. It is not a big leap to then offer medical services to nonresident foreigners who travel for the specific reason of accessing those services. Combine the trip with shopping or sightseeing and the package is even more attractive.
