Creating the personification of BMW Group design

Chris Bangle

A chapter in Creativity: Unconventional Wisdom from 20 Accomplished Minds, 2007, pp 156-169 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Chris Bangle is BMW Group chief of design and has been credited with the achievement of making BMWs stand out from the pack. Within the BMW Group, he is responsible for design within all brands, BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce. He began his career at Opel, and then moved to Fiat, where he became chief designer of Fiat Centro Stile. He joined BMW in 1992, their first American chief of design. To many, the styling for BMW represents a move into the future for what had been considered stolidly conservative cars and, among BMW fans, there has been a vocal debate concerning this change of style.
