An Analysis of the Alliance Capability Development Process

Abstract: Abstract Having empirically examined the impact of intra-firm mechanisms on alliance performance in Chapter 4, we found evidence for the fact that mechanisms help develop alliance capabilities as they positively influence the ability to manage alliances. This enhances our micro-level understanding of the impact of these mechanisms. Moreover, the results of the expert interviews clearly show that successful firms follow a certain path when it comes to developing alliance capabilities. This, however, has not been substantiated empirically. To fill this gap, this chapter empirically analyses the relationships between the key concepts involved in the alliance capability development process. It analyses the interactions between experience, alliance capabilities and performance. Examining the relationships between these concepts may facilitate a better understanding of the intra-firm process underlying alliance capability development.
