Abstract:
Abstract We live in a world of imbalances, or should we simply say contradictions? Twenty per cent of the world’s population accounts for more than 80 per cent of total consumption. Less than 400 billionaires have as much wealth as the poorest 45 per cent of the world’s population. In the developing world, more than 1.2 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than a dollar a day. Fully half of the world’s population lives on less than two dollars a day. The regional distribution of poverty and its resulting negative effects (such as premature deaths and malnutrition) is also imbalanced, with most being centred in the Southern hemisphere where ecosystems are fragile and weather systems unreliable (and, it appears, becoming increasingly so).
