Abstract The search for energy security in the twenty-first century has become a key policy goal of states at the national, regional and global levels. Impacted upon by unprecedented economic growth, industrialization, urbanization, population increase and the technological revolution, the need for energy and its sustained supply have pushed energy security to the forefront of the national agenda of states in the domestic and external arenas.
