Abstract:
Abstract Feminist in intent,1 the premise of this book is that we are better placed to redress workplace discrimination the more we know how it develops, is maintained and changes over time. In the narrowest sense of the word, the reference to sex in the book’s title is about how people are discriminated against because of their physiological characteristics. But it is more than that. The book explores how workplace practices shape our understandings of masculinity, femininity and sexual attraction. Thus, the book is about how basic physiological differences between men and women (‘sex’) are translated into culturally specific patterns of behaviour (‘gender’) which become attached to the sexes in given work settings (Oakley, 1972).
