Abstract:
Abstract This chapter introduces the reader to the Australian health sector under three main headings in order to provide background to subsequent chapters. The first section describes the Australian healthcare sector and outlines key features in relation to finance, organization, employment and control of health professionals. The second section examines the health sector reform process, exploring the main drivers for reform and the policy and management initiatives that were incorporated within a New Public Management approach. The third section outlines the industrial relation reform strategies and their impact on the healthcare sector.
