The ‘Paretiani’ and Their Critics

Michael McLure

Chapter 6 in The Paretian School and Italian Fiscal Sociology, 2007, pp 99-113 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In his obituary entry on Pareto published for the Economic Journal, Maffeo Pantaleoni observed that Pareto had the good luck of having some very eminent scholars, such as E. Barone, L. Amoroso and G. Borgatta. But he had also the bad luck of creating Epigoni who only repeat his words, oppose every criticism, would stop the progress of science where he stopped, strain his theories and use him as a spring-board for themselves. Every great man has had to labour under the inconveniences created by Epigoni. These tend to the formation of ‘schools’, more properly called obnoxious syndicates of fools. (Pantaleoni, 1923 [1999], p. 38, Italics in the original text)
