Abstract: Abstract There was little to celebrate in 1974, the year of the consortium bank movement’s tenth anniversary. Currency turmoil, recession and inflation, fuelled by the quadrupling of the oil price after the Yom Kippur War, dogged the international economy. In the Euromarkets, confidence was at a low ebb and business was bad all round. In the UK, there was confrontation between Edward Heath’s Conservative government and the miners; despite the efforts of employment minister, William Whitelaw, a national emergency and a three-day working week had to be declared because of power shortages.
