Chapter 4 in The Spanish Economy in the New Europe, 2000, pp 70-87 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract After analysing the structure and efficiency of the productive system and the situation and dynamics of the labour market, in the present chapter we shall attempt to evaluate the trends in the Spanish economy’s competitiveness since Spain’s entry into the European Union as well as its position in the changing corporate environment brought about by EMU. Special attention is given to the loss of the exchange rate as an adjustment mechanism for coping with problems of competitiveness.
