Please, Portland, Don’t Pearlize Joe’s Garage
Pierre Ouellette
Chapter 16 in Social Culture and High-Tech Economic Development, 2006, pp 120-121 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In a widely known song by the late Frank Zappa, he sang the praises of a place called Joe’s Garage. Here, Joe and his band crammed in next to an old Dodge and blissfully banged out primitive rock n’ roll for hours on end. The garage was cheap, crummy and minimal but had one glorious virtue: It was utterly uncritical of the musical explorations going on within it. And, ultimately, it produced Zappa, considered by many to be one of the great musical geniuses of our era.
