A Reminder of Realities

Johan Roos

Chapter 6 in Thinking from Within, 2006, pp 97-114 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract So far in this book we have described and illustrated how to practise the conceptual, behavioural and material dimension of our imagination, construct together by manipulating materials with our hands and use these objects to mediate communication — while keeping the emerging benefits of play in mind. The tales of OilCo, ChemCo, PrintCo and TelCo illustrated how these ideas can be played out in real-life strategy practice, broadly defined. In my experience, however, Thinking from Within remains the exception and the ‘prescribed’ way of thinking more of the rule in organized life in general and in strategy practice in particular. Despite the many calls from scholars and gurus in the field, strategy practice remains in many firms an unimaginative and boring routine of deductive analysis that, by definition, rarely tap into the imagination and spontaneity of the people involved. As such, strategy practices risk being more of a waste of time than a valuable investment.
