The self-esteem industry
Adrian Furnham
A chapter in Head & Heart Management, 2008, pp 212-214 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract A great deal of damage has been done by the self-esteem movement (SEM). For a long time, SEM advocates – often counselors, teachers and therapists – have seen low self-esteem (LSE) as the cause of most individual and societal problems and ills. So they set about designing feel-good, esteem-raising courses to help people gain pride and self-worth.
