Abstract:
Abstract It goes without saying that land tenure systems are the critical determinant of production and income distribution in agrarian communities. As with other irrigated rice areas in the Philippines, the land tenure system in East Laguna Village has seen major changes since the 1960s, resulting mainly from land reform programmes. Yet the size distribution of operational landholdings among farmers has changed relatively little, while the numbers of landless agricultural labourers have increased sharply relative to the number of farmers. In this chapter we look at how such a pattern of agrarian change has emerged through the interaction of land reform with strong population pressure and the development of new technology.
