Chapter 1 in Banking in the New Europe, 2002, pp 1-24 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract At the end of an extensive legislative programme which preceded the entry into force of the Single Market in 1992, the Council of Ministers asked the European Commission to present in 1996 an ex post analysis of the impact and effectiveness of the legislation which had been put in place. The Banking and Credit Sector was one of some fifteen sectors analysed in depth to assess the impact and effectiveness of the legislation. This volume has its origins in that research programme and several of the authors were involved in supporting and undertaking desk research, case studies of banks, and survey research which provided the basis for the initial report on the impact of the Single Market Programme (SMP) on banking and credit institutions in twelve EU countries (ERE, 1997).
