Abstract Given the rapidly deteriorating economic situation and the apparent militancy of workers and other progressive organizations, seizing political control was an obvious strategy. Following the lead of Lewis Powell, business mobilized enormous resources in its successful offensive, but this action could not have succeeded without the willing collaboration of politicians.
