Abstract:
Abstract Demographics and Socioeconomics. Maine, located in the New England region of the United States, has a population of 1.3 million people, making it the eleventh least populous state in 2005. The state’s population increased by 8,750 people from 2000 to 2005, and is projected to reach 1.4 million by 2025. This 0.5 percent projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 1.0 percent. Per capita personal income in Maine was $30,808 in 2005, ranking the fourteenth lowest in the country and $3,687 below the national average. Per capita income in Maine grew at an average annual rate of 3.5 percent from 2000 to 2005, compared to 2.9 percent nationally.
