Abstract:
Abstract Demographics and Socioeconomics. With a population of 1.8 million people, West Virginia was the fourteenth least populous state in the United States in 2005. From 2000 to 2005 the state’s population decreased by 36,594 people, and is projected to decline by 0.02 percent a year, on average, through 2025. The state’s 2005 per capita personal income of $26,029 was the third lowest in the United States, some $8,466 below the national average. Per capita income in West Virginia grew at an average annual rate of 3.5 percent from 2000 to 2005, compared to 2.9 percent nationally.
