Abstract: Abstract Imagine yourself waking up in the Sumerian city of Uruk six thousand years ago. You find the water jug and splash your face, then wolf down some wheat-barley mush, cooked yesterday, plus a couple of figs, grab your bronze-bladed hoe, and, along with two thousand others, head off to work. As you pass the city gates, the crowd splits up. You head north to the garbanzo bean fields, where the overseer has you start clearing an irrigation ditch from the great river, the Euphrates. Later, you help dry the harvest and prepare the next planting.
