Abstract: Abstract With a population of 2.9 million people, Mississippi is the thirty-first most populous state in 2006. The state’s population increased by 65,882 people from 2000 to 2006, and is projected to increase to 3.1 million by 2025. This 0.3% projected annual growth rate is below the national average of 0.8%. Per capita personal income in Mississippi was $26,908 in 2006, up from $25,454 in 2005. For 2006, this was $9,721 below the national average and the lowest in the country. The state’s per capita income grew at an average annual rate of 4.2% from 2000 to 2006, compared to 3.5% nationally.
