Abstract: Abstract With a population of 944,632 people, Montana was the seventh least populous state in the United States in 2006. From 2000 to 2006 the state’s population increased by 42,437 people, and is projected to increase to 1.0 million by 2025. This 0.5% projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 0.8%. The state’s 2006 per capita personal income of $30,886 was higher compared to $29,220 in 2005 and tenth lowest in the United States, some $5,743 below the national average. Per capita income in Montana grew at an average annual rate of 5.1% from 2000 to 2006, compared to 3.5% nationally.
