Globalisation: A Personal View

Tony Ehrenreich

Chapter 3 in Diversity, 2007, pp 66-75 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Globalisation is a phenomena that has been with us for thousands of years, when human beings for the first time set off across land and sea in search of new areas to occupy. It has more recently, taken the form of first colonialism and then imperialism. The present form of globalisation, however, has a very distinct feature in that it is an attempt to define global relations in a way that benefits a particular group or transnational class, but more about that later. There have been, without doubt, many benefits that have flowed from an ever increasing globalising world, but unfortunately for people in the Southern Hemisphere the more negative features of globalisation outweigh the positives by far. Your location in the debate around globalisation is informed by the impact that it has on your personal circumstances, and in the instance of this chapter it advances the perspectives of working families.
