Abstract: Abstract Japan’s rapid industrial growth has demonstrated that late industrialization was actually possible during the 20th century. She was a latecomer in the world economy when it ‘opened the country’ (kaikoku) to modern international trade in the late 19th century. By the end of 20th century, nevertheless, she has become the first major nation outside the Western mainstream, to succeed in ‘catching up’ with the economic and technological leaders
